Chiang Kai-shek蒋介石
1887-1975 pinyinJiang Jie-sh^Chinese general & politician; leader of Chinese Nationalist independence movement, president of Nationalist government in China (1928-49); waged civil war with Communists (1946-49); president of Nationalist government in exile on Taiwan, 1950-75)
由于威氏拼音的原因,第一个出现在我们面前的是蒋委员长。只是美国人对他的评价并不高,是个politician罢了。
注:politician译为政客,而statesman译为政治家,感情色彩很不一样。从后面对很多中国政治人物的评价来看,老美对statesman与politician的区分标准很耐人寻味。
Ch'in Shih Huang Ti秦始皇帝(嬴政)
circa 259-210 B.C. prename Cheng Chinese emperor (221-210 B.C.); created Ch'in dynasty; constructed the Great Wall of China; quarrel with Confucian scholars led to Burning of the Books
寡人始皇帝就是霸气!放到英文,寡人还是老大,哈哈哈哈哈哈哈!
(注:这句话是在我发现蒋介石前写的)
秃驴,竟敢抢寡人的位子!
(发现蒋介石后)
Confucius孔夫子
551-479 B.C. Chinese teacher & philosopher; became the most revered person in Chinese history; his teachings form basis of Confucianism
-Confucian \k-n--fy--sh-n\ adjective or noun
-Confucianist \-sh--nist\ adjective or noun
孔圣人也是,无论在英文还是中文,排位都很高啊。
Deng Xiaoping邓小平
- see TENG HSIAO-P'ING
Feng Yu-hsiang冯玉祥
1882-1948 Chinese general; the Christian general; initially supported Kuomintang and Chiang Kai-shek, later opposed them; defeated, driven into exile (1930)
韦氏词典对冯巩曾祖父的这段描述,概括起来就一句话:”整个就一悲剧啊!” 可能念在他是个基督徒,才收录进来的吧。
Genghis Khan成吉思汗
circa 1162-1227 Mongol conqueror; consolidated nomadic tribes into a unified Mongolia; created an empire extending from China to Europe's Adriatic Sea
据研究,全世界有近1600万人,大约占8%的亚洲人是成吉思汗的后裔。在欧洲和美国也有不少男人带着成吉思汗当年的那根Y染色体。
霸气!这特么才是进化论的真谛!
Han Wu Ti汉武帝
156-87 B.C. originally Liu Ch'e often called Wu Ti Chinese emperor (140-87); expanded Chinese empire (133-101); reorganized government; made Confucianism the state religion
Han Yu韩愈
768-824 Han Wen-kung Chinese poet, essayist, & philosopher; laid foundation of Neo-Confucianism; advocated simple prose style, unorthodox forms
注:” Neo-Confucianism”貌似是指古文运动?如果我高中语文还没忘光的话..
Hung-wu洪武
1328-1398 Chu Y-an-changChinese emperor (1368-98); founder of Ming dynasty; ruled despotically but established schools, reformed civil service, extended rule beyond China
洪武,被美国人的文化层次震撼到了有木有!
Hua Kuo-feng华国锋
1920- pinyinHua Guo.fengChinese premier (1976-80); promoted more pragmatic domestic and foreign policy, encouraging industry and education and closer ties to the West and to developing nations
老美对80年代末的这两年的中国史似乎格外了解,多位这段历史中的人物都出现在韦氏词典中,且均有一定程度的评价。华主席是拼音排在最前面的一位,评价也相当正面。
Hu Shih胡适
1891-1962 Chinese philosopher; one of leading liberals in China and opponent of communists
唯一一个姓胡的,略失望。这词典版本还是太老了..
Jiang Zemin江core
1926- general secretary of Chinese Communist party (1989-); president of China (1993-); became powerful following pro-democracy Tiananmen Square massacre; promoted continued “open door” economic policy
你们这帮编字典的,什么massacre,图森破! sometimes拿衣服!!
Kublai Khan忽必烈汗
1215-1294; overlord of all Mongol dominions in Europe and Asia; founder of Mongol dynasty in China; completed subjugation and organization of China; visited by Marco Polo
K'ung孔祥熙

Lee Tsung-Dao李政道

诺贝尔奖什么的
Li Hung-chang李鸿章
1823-1901 Chinese statesman; promoted Western ideas and modernizing projects; founded Chinese navy
大清外交第一人,洋人果然忘不了他啊,而且对他的评价相当高呢。注意,是statesman。
Li Peng李鹏
1928- Chinese prime minister (1987-98); favored softened relations with the Soviet Union and harsh repression of the student-based pro-democracy movement
他怎么会...有些意外,是不是?估计是那年的“harsh repression”让老美印象太深了,使得他得以成为进入美国人字典的这批中国人。
Li Po李白
701-762 Chinese poet; probably the greatest Chinese poet, famous for exquisite imagery, rich language, allusions, cadence of his lyrics
Li Shih-min李世民
- see T'ANG T'AI TSUNG
Lin Yu-t'ang林语堂
1895-1976 Chinese author & philologist; wrote wide variety of works in Chinese and English; founded several Chinese magazines specializing in social satire, Western-style journalism
用英文写书的中国人不多啊,可惜据说也与诺奖擦肩而过?
Liu Shao-ch'I刘少奇
1898-1974 Chinese communist politician; denounced during the Cultural Revolution and banished; posthumously reinstated
可怜,刘主席也只落了个politician的称号。
Lu Hsun鲁迅
1881-1936 pseudonym ofChou Shu-JenChinese writer; established reputation with short stories in western manner
鲁迅是靠short stories in western manner出名的吗?咱们的课本怎么是说杂文呢?
真正的牛人都是能耐得住寂寞的,既然唐宗、汉武、成吉思汗都露过面了,那么接下来...
Mao Tse-tung我朝太祖
1893-1976 pinyinMao Ze-dongChinese communist; leader of People's Republic of China (1949-76); instituted Rectification Campaign, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution to attempt to implement his policies
Maoist \,ma~-ist\ adjective or noun
请注意,只有两个中国人的名字是有衍生词的:孔夫子和我朝太祖。
另注:关于那个Rectification Campaign,我查了一下,貌似是整风运动..
Shih Huang-ti始皇帝
- see CH'IN SHIH HUANG TI
Soong Ai-ling宋霭龄
1888-1973 wife of H. H. K'ung
Soong Ch'ing-ling宋庆龄
1892-1981 wife of Sun Yat-sen
Soong Mei-ling宋美龄

Soong Tzu-wen宋子文

瞧这一家子四位。

国父被列为statesman应该是不会引起任何争议的。
T'ang T'ai Tsung唐太宗
600-649 originally Li Shih-min\,le-,shir-,min\ Chinese emperor; often considered greatest Chinese emperor for reunification of China and institution of thorough reforms; his reign a high point of Chinese culture and administration
哈哈哈哈,我才是“the greatest Chinese emperor”,始皇帝什么的弱爆了!
Teng Hsiao-p'ing邓小平
1904-1997 Chinese Communist leader (1977-97); instituted sequence of reforms to modernize China
介绍很短,很短..
Wang Ching-wei汪精卫
1883-1944 Chinese politician; president of Kuomintang government (1932-38); became strongly pro-Japanese; puppet ruler of occupied China (1940-44)
对此人的评价与我们学的历史非常相符。汪副委员长还是挺符合politician的典型形象的。
Wu-ti武帝
- see HAN WU TI
看来美国人不太了解,我们历史上叫武帝的真不止这一个..
Yang Chen Ning杨振宁
1922- Chinese physicist; awarded (with T.D. Lee) 1957 Nobel prize for physics for work disproving the law of conservation of parity
唯一一位我用肉眼看到过真人的人物。感动了...
Y-an Shih-k'ai袁世凯
1859-1916 Chinese soldier & statesman; president of China (1913-16); restored Confucianism
这...在老美看来,人家袁大总统根本不是什么封建复辟,而是在保护民族传统文化有木有...
也是statesman!
Zhao Zi yang赵爷爷
1919- Chinese politician; premier (1980-87); general secretary of Chinese Communist party (1987-89)
人家韦氏词典都没给什么具体评价,我也就还是闭嘴好了...唯一值得注意的还是politician这个措辞。
PS 1.
因为落后的搜寻方式的原因,必然会有不少遗漏,如有发现还请指出!
PS 2.
一个顺带的发现:
shanghai居然可以作动词,还是及物动词有木有!!
shanghai
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form: shanghaied ; shanghaiing
Etymology: Shanghai, China; from the formerly widespread use of this method to secure sailors for voyages to the Orient
Date: 1871
1 a : to put aboard a ship by force often with the help of liquor or a drug b : to put by force or threat of force into or as if into a place of detention
2 : to put by trickery into an undesirable position
-shanghaier noun
不过,这词的意思并不太好。另外,shanghaier实际是指被shanghai了的人,而不是上海人,非常奇妙...
